How to get a UK Giffgaff eSIM and number via the official app
Official Giffgaff eSIM path: eligibility, your own card or PayPal, in-app install, then point SMS at that UK line.
When you need a UK number that can receive SMS, start on the official path. giffgaff is a UK MVNO on Telefónica UK (O2). A plastic SIM ships only to a valid UK address. An eSIM skips the post, but you are still joining that same UK service.
This note is only how to get a UK Giffgaff eSIM through the official app or site: check the phone, pay with a card or PayPal you may use, install in the app on this device, then set the line as default for SMS. No fake addresses, no SMS farms, no one else’s card.
Check eligibility before you pay
The phone has three gates
Official help says the device must support eSIM, be network-unlocked, and run the latest giffgaff app. Named examples include iPhone XS or later, Galaxy S20 / Note 20 / Z Fold and Flip or later, Pixel 3 or later, plus some Oppo, Honor, Sony and Xiaomi models. Smartwatches are not supported yet. Seeing eSIM or an EID in Settings is not enough if the carrier still locks the slot.
Account and payment
This is a UK consumer network. Plan calls and texts are written as standard UK numbers. Community payback text says 16 or over; the HelpBot privacy line says 18 before you share personal data there. For a new member’s first eSIM activation, the terms say a voucher usually cannot buy that first plan (unless the activation follows a SIM swap). Use your own debit card, credit card or PayPal, or one you have permission to use.
Official path: eligibility → pay → activate → SMS

01
Confirm this phone can take an eSIM
Use the phone that will carry the line. In Settings look for eSIM / Add Cellular Plan; dial
*#06#and see whether an EID appears. The phone must be unlocked. Install the latest giffgaff app from the App Store, Google Play or Huawei AppGallery. Official help asks for a solid connection and suggests Wi‑Fi. -
02
Create the account on the site or app and pick eSIM
New members: on giffgaff.com or in the app, create an account, choose a SIM-only plan, then eSIM rather than a plastic card. Existing members: sign into the app first, then Account → SIM → Replace my SIM → Switch to a new eSIM. A switch started on the website dashboard still has to finish in the app.
-
03
Pay with a card or PayPal you may use
The terms list approved vouchers, PayPal, and debit or credit cards giffgaff accepts. A new eSIM’s first plan usually cannot use a voucher. Plan price is the same on plastic and eSIM. If a payment is declined, switch to a listed method or ask official support. Do not buy a “guaranteed approval” workaround.
-
04
Finish install only in the app on this phone
Sign in with the same account that requested the eSIM and follow the on-screen install. Official help puts eSIM switching between 4:30am and 9:30pm. New members should come live once the profile is on the phone. A switch from an existing SIM usually takes under an hour and can take up to 24 hours when busy. The old plastic SIM or eSIM stops; remove it so it does not steal the default line.
-
05
Confirm the number and point SMS at this line
The number appears on the dashboard and the app home screen. You can also text
Numberto43430. On dual-SIM phones set giffgaff as the default for calls and texts. Plan texts cover standard UK mobiles and 01 / 02 / 03 landlines; picture or video messages are extra unless the plan says otherwise. Use outside the UK is charged as roaming.
How SMS works — do not pick the wrong line
| Job | What official copy says | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Find your number | Dashboard, app home, or text Number to 43430 | The number exists after activation |
| Bank / two-factor SMS | Set giffgaff as the default SMS line and keep a live plan or credit | Send a test before binding a bank |
| A second SIM on the same account | One active SIM per account; another activation is a swap and kills the old SIM | A second number needs a new account |
giffgaff help: eSIMs are activated through the giffgaff app only. They do not provide QR codes, SM-DP+ addresses or manual activation codes.
Edges worth reading before you travel
- Plastic SIMs ship in the UK only
- The terms say delivery is to a valid UK address. If you are abroad and cannot wait for post, the official option is eSIM, not a foreign shipping hack. Activation must finish on the device that will use the eSIM.
- Abroad is not the UK plan
- The terms say roaming pricing applies when the SIM is used outside the UK. 5G roaming may be unavailable under current wording. Read the official roaming page before you fly; do not assume the allowance is global.
- Watches and Quick Transfer
- Official help says wearable eSIM pieces are not ready. Community copy says eSIM Quick Transfer is not supported. Move a number with Replace my SIM in the app. Do not try to clone a giffgaff line with Apple’s eSIM transfer.
# Official path (check help.giffgaff.com)
New: site or app → create account → pick plan → eSIM → finish in app
Existing: Account → SIM → Replace my SIM → Switch to a new eSIM
Pay: card or PayPal you may use; new eSIM usually no voucher
SMS: set default line; text Number to 43430
Window: 04:30–21:30 for switches
The number is live; a short sync still fits one page
UK SMS stays on giffgaff. A five-to-fifteen-minute diagram still only needs a browser room: frogmeet sends a space code, voice plus a board, then you leave. Phone-browser limits are on the mobile browser note; joining steps are on create and join a room.
Questions worth checking
Can I install a Giffgaff eSIM from an email QR code?
No. Official help says they do not provide QR codes, SM-DP+ addresses or manual activation codes. A plan bought on the website still installs in the giffgaff app on this phone.
Can a new eSIM use a voucher for the first plan?
The terms say a new member’s first eSIM activation usually cannot use a voucher for that first plan, unless the activation follows a SIM swap. Use a debit card, credit card or PayPal that giffgaff accepts.
How do I know the number can receive SMS?
The dashboard or app home shows the number; you can also text Number to 43430. Set that line as default for SMS, send a test to a number you trust, then bind a bank or two-factor login. On dual-SIM phones confirm the default is not the other SIM.
