iOS 26 Photos app guide: Clean Up, editing, compatible iPhones, open after update

Photos updates ship with iOS 26. Install the OS, then use Library and Collections tabs; Clean Up needs Apple Intelligence hardware, standard edits live under Edit.

Clean Up follows Apple Intelligence rules

Apple Support article 121429 states Clean Up is powered by Apple Intelligence on supported iPhone models with Apple Intelligence enabled and iOS 18.1 or later (including iOS 26). Models outside that list still get Adjust, filters, and crop on iOS 26.

    Confirm iOS 26 is installed

    Open Settings → General → About and verify iOS 26. If needed, back up per Apple Support, then install via Settings → General → Software Update. Compatible models are listed under “iPhone models compatible with iOS 26” in the iPhone manual (iPhone 11, second-generation SE, and later).

    Open Photos and read the tabs

    Tap Photos on the Home Screen. You should see Library and Collections tabs with Search available in each view per Apple release notes.

    Standard edit: Adjust and filters

    Open a photo, tap Edit. Apple’s guide (iphb08064d57/26) covers Adjust for light and color, filters, and crop; Photographic Styles on iPhone 16 and later follow Apple’s separate camera docs.

    On supported hardware, tap Clean Up in the editor. Apple’s guide: tap highlighted distractions or brush/circle objects; pinch to zoom; tap Done. First use may download components; language and region limits are in article 121429.

Apple: Clean Up removes background distractions but requires Apple Intelligence and listed hardware. Installing iOS 26 does not give every iPhone the same AI editing stack.

Questions worth checking

No Clean Up after updating to iOS 26?

Check support.apple.com/121429 for your model and confirm Apple Intelligence is enabled. Other iPhones still get standard edit tools without the Clean Up tab.

Can I update Photos from the App Store?

No. Apple delivers Photos changes through the iOS 26 software update via Settings → General → Software Update.

Does iPhone 11 get spatial scenes?

Apple lists spatial scenes under iOS 26 Photos features; whether a photo offers the option is on-device. That is separate from Clean Up’s Apple Intelligence hardware requirement.
