Apple Support lists iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), M4, iPad Air (3rd generation and later including M2/M3), iPad (8th generation and later and A16), and iPad mini (5th generation and later and A17 Pro). The 7th-generation iPad is not listed.

Some headlines need M1 or newer

Back up, then install from iPad Settings

    Back up and confirm the model

    Apple Support recommends backing up before downloading new software. Use iCloud backup, or a local backup via Finder on Mac or iTunes on PC. Compare your iPad against the list at support.apple.com/en-us/123706.

    Connect Wi‑Fi and charge

    Connect iPad to stable Wi‑Fi and keep it charged or on power. Apple documentation warns that weak networks or low battery can interrupt downloads.

    Settings → General → Software Update

    On iPad open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. When iPadOS 26 appears, tap Download and Install and follow the onscreen steps. You can enable automatic updates on the same screen for overnight installs.

    Wait for restart and verify

    Do not force-restart during install. After reboot, if you rely on Apple Intelligence or external-display windows, confirm Apple Intelligence is enabled and language settings match Apple’s requirements.
