Searching how to install Xcode 26 on Mac usually means four checks: whether macOS Tahoe 26 is installed, Mac App Store vs developer.apple.com/download, whether a free Apple Account is enough, and getting a first SwiftUI app to run in Simulator.

Apple previewed Xcode 26 at WWDC 2025 alongside iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. Product overview: developer.apple.com/xcode/; requirements and downloads: Apple Support and developer.apple.com/download/. This guide follows Apple docs: upgrade the Mac, install Xcode, create a SwiftUI App project, run in Simulator.

System requirements are a hard gate

Apple states Xcode 26 requires a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26. Install macOS 26 via System Settings → General → Software Update before App Store or Developer downloads to avoid “macOS version too low” failures.

Two official sources

Mac App Store suits everyday installs and delta updates. developer.apple.com/download suits full .xip builds or pinned version numbers. Both need an Apple Account; a paid Developer Program is not required for local Simulator work.

Download from Mac App Store or Developer

01

Mac App Store

Open App Store on Mac, search Xcode, tap Get/Open. Apple distributes Xcode as a free IDE; first install is large—use stable Wi‑Fi and check free disk space per Apple Support guidance.

02

developer.apple.com/download

Sign in with your Apple Account, open Applications, select Xcode 26. Double-click the .xip to expand, drag Xcode into Applications. Apple documents this path for fixed build numbers or offline packages.

03

First launch components

On first open Xcode prompts for additional components and the license agreement. iOS Simulator runtimes download during setup or under Xcode → Settings → Platforms—manage iOS 26 Simulator support there if the device list is empty.

Create your first SwiftUI project

  1. 01
    Open Xcode and new project

Launch Xcode, File → New → Project. Under iOS (or multiplatform) pick the App template, Next. Apple’s SwiftUI documentation uses the App lifecycle and WindowGroup as the starting path.

  2. 02
    Product Name and Interface

Enter a Product Name (e.g. HelloSwiftUI), Team = your Apple Account (Personal Team is fine), Interface SwiftUI, Language Swift, Life Cycle SwiftUI App. Create generates ContentView.swift and the *App.swift entry.

  3. 03
    Run on Simulator

Pick an iPhone Simulator in the scheme control (e.g. iPhone 17). Press Run (▶) or + R. Apple docs note Simulator ships with Xcode to preview SwiftUI without a tethered device.

  4. 04
    Check SDK and deployment target

Select the project → General, confirm Deployment Target matches the iOS 26 APIs you test. Build Settings should show the iOS 26 SDK bundled with Xcode 26. If Simulators are missing, install the iOS 26 runtime under Settings → Platforms.

Apple: Xcode is the official IDE for Apple platforms. macOS Tahoe 26, then Xcode 26 and Simulator runtimes, is the public path to SwiftUI development for iOS 26.

Edges to read

macOS 26 not installed
App Store or .xip install may halt with an OS requirement error. Apple Support recommends completing the macOS Tahoe 26 update first.
Simulator runtime missing
Without iOS 26 under Xcode → Settings → Platforms, scheme lists may lack iPhone Simulators. Download there per Apple documentation.
Signing warnings
Add your Apple ID under Xcode → Settings → Accounts for a Personal Team; Signing & Capabilities can manage local builds. Simulator-only runs typically need no paid program.

Questions worth checking

Do I need a paid Developer Program for Xcode 26?

No. Apple lets you install Xcode with a free Apple Account, create a Personal Team, and develop on Simulator and your own devices. App Store and TestFlight distribution require the paid program.

Is App Store Xcode the same as developer.apple.com?

Same official product line. App Store handles updates; Developer downloads offer verifiable .xip builds for CI or pinned toolchain versions.

Why macOS 26 first?

Apple ties Xcode 26 to macOS Tahoe 26 and the iOS 26 SDK. Installers block on unsupported macOS versions to keep the toolchain consistent.
